Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was an Austrian musician and composer. He lived from 1756 to 1791. He started composing at the age of five and wrote more than 600 pieces of music. He was only 35 years old when he died.

解説

lived / started / wrote / was / died are all past simple. 例文で使われているlived / started / wrote / was / diedが所謂「過去形」。

■「過去形」の形

例文

1.I work in a travel agency now. Before that i worked in a department store. 2.We invited them to our party, but they decided not to come. 3.The police stopped me on my way home last night. 4.Laura passed her exam because she studied very hard. 5.Mozart wrote more than 600 pieces of music. 6.We saw Tanya in town a few days ago. 7.I went to the cinema three times last week. 8.It was cold, so I shut the window.

解説

Very often the past simple ends in -ed.(regular verbs) 過去形の方は、基本的には末尾に「ed」をつける。上記例文の１～２。 上記例文の３～４は基本形だが、末尾によっては変化の規則がある。 y changes to i before the ending -ed. if a verb ends in -e, we add -d for the past. if the word has more than one syllable, we double the consonant at the end. But many verbs are irregular. The past simple does not end in -ed. ただ、多くの動詞はイレギュラーなパターンで変形する。上記例文の５～８．

■疑問文・否定文の中での「過去形」

例文

1.Did you go out last night?Yes, I went to the cinema, but i didn't enjoy the film much. 2.When did Mr Thomas die? About ten years ago. 3.They didn't invite us to the party, so we didn't go. 4.Did you have time to do the shopping? No, I didn't. 5.What did you do at the weekend?(not What did you at the weekend?) 6.I didn't do anything.(not I didn't anything.)

解説

In questions and negatives we use did/didn't + infinitive.(enjoy/see/go etc) 疑問文・否定文では、did/didn't＋原形を使う。上記例文の１～４。 In the following examples, do is the main verb in the sentence.(did...do / didn't do) doがメインの動詞の場合。上記例文の５～６。

用法D

■be動詞(am/is/are)の「過去形」

例文

1.I was angry because they were late. 2.Was the weather good when you were on holiday? 3.They weren't able to come because they were so busy. 4.Dis you go out last night or were you too tired?

解説

We do not use did in negatives and questions with was/were. be動詞の否定文・疑問文の場合は、didは使わない。was/wereを使う。上記例文の１～４．
